Protect Your Life Insurance Policy from Digital Fraudsters: Safety Checklist
We live in a world where everything is just a click away. Paying bills, shopping, buying groceries, transferring money, renewing your life insurance policy and much more; all this within minutes through our phone. Life has become easier, isn’t it? Everything so seamless, quick and efficient, and most importantly hassle-free because it is from the comfort of our home.
While technology has surely made life simpler and smarter, have we ever imagined the repercussions it has had on us? This has opened doors to several fraudsters who are getting smarter every day.
Over the last decade, online scams in India have gone up sharply. This has become rampant, and all age groups are being targeted across platforms, which means chances are, you or someone you know has already received a suspicious call, message, or a payment link.
The good news is, with awareness and caution, you can protect yourself and your family from these frauds.
What are the most common frauds in life insurance and how do we stay safe?
Fake websites and payment links
One of the most dangerous scams is when fraudsters create a fake website that looks exactly like a real company’s site. Let’s take an example of life insurance policy call. As a customer, you receive a call and link for “policy renewal”, and the link looks exactly like your insurer’s official website. The design, the logo, the overall look and feel, everything seems genuine. But the moment the payment is made, you realize that the money is gone, and you have been trapped.
What should you do?
- Don’t trust links sent over SMS, WhatsApp, or email unless you are sure it’s from the company.
- Look closely at the web address, even a small spelling change means it’s fake.
- Always type the official website yourself. The official website of RNLIC is - www.reliancenipponlife.com
Calls with exciting offers
This is a common trap. Fraudsters call and say: “Your old policy has a new bonus” or “Your policy is being merged, and you will get extra benefits if you pay now.” Sounds tempting, right? But it’s not true. There is no concept of merging policies in life insurance.
What should you do?
- No life insurer will ask you to pay money to claim a bonus.
- Always confirm with your advisor or call the company helpline directly before taking any discussion forward.

UPI autopay
UPI has become the most common platform for payments leading to an explosion in scams too. Fraudsters send an “autopay request” on your insurance app. Instead of receiving money, you are unknowingly authorizing them to take money from your account, which happens in seconds.
What should you do?
- Never approve a UPI request unless you know why you are getting it.
- Remember: to receive money, you don’t need to enter a PIN. Only use your PIN when you are sending money.
Phishing SMS and WhatsApp messages
You may have seen messages like: “Congratulations! You have won a lucky draw as part of your consistent premium payments. Click here to claim.” or “Your policy has lapsed. Renew now” or “Redeem your policy reward points and win a gold coin.” These are classic phishing attempts. The link leads you to a fake page through which they can get your personal and bank details.
What should you do?
- Ignore these messages that sound urgent.
- Never click on unknown links.
- Banks, insurers, or the regulators never ask for personal details over call, SMS or WhatsApp.
Impersonation Calls
Sometimes fraudsters pretend to be from your bank, insurer, or even a government or regulator’s office. They may sound professional and convincing. The goal is always the same: to make you panic and share details like OTPs, card numbers, CVVs or passwords.
What should you do?
- Don’t share any personal or financial information over calls.
- If you are unsure, hang up and call the company directly on their customer care/helpline number.
Our company helpline is – 1800 102 1010.
